1998
USA Today carried
a full-page advertisement from fast food
giant, Burger King announcing the introduction
of its new Left-Handed Whopper. The target
audience for this product was 32-million
left-handed Americans. The new left-handed
Whopper included the same ingredients as
the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, secret
sauce, hamburger patty) except all of the
condiments were rotated 180 degrees, better
balancing the burger and reducing spillage.
Burger King senior
vice president for marketing, Jim Watkins,
said the new Whopper was the "ultimate
'HAVE IT YOUR WAY' for our left-handed customers."
The offer was available initially only in
the United States, but depending upon the
response, would eventually be rolled out
to other heavily left-handed nations as
well.
People responded
in droves to the advertisement asking no
only for the left-handed Whopper, but the
right-handed version as well.
Now that was quite
a whopper, wasn't it?
